audio-visual performance, 2010
15.09.2010, 20:30-21:00, Akademia Gallery
The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.
“Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut
Runabout project is an ongoing series of cross-disciplinary, interactive performances with an ever-changing lineup. The project was started in 2009 by Albena Baeva and Petya Boyukova. Working with different musicians, they create new musical instruments with custom hardware and software that explore the borders between performance, sound and visuals. For their latest performance, the Bergeron Experiment, based on the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut1, Baeva and Boyukova team up with Andronia Popova, front-woman of Nasekomix2. Bergeron Experiment features a custom-built electronic accordion and an interactive costume that provide a twofold channel for audio-visual interaction. By playing on the accordion the musician is able to manipulate the visual parts and vice versa - through the sensors installed into the costume the actor influences the music. “Burdened” by the possibilities of the unfamiliar expression form, music and visuals strive to find a common language and to communicate with the public in one voice. Runabout project has performed at Sofia Undergroud (2009), Small Season at Sfumato (2009), DA Fest (2009) and Kaliakria Weekend Fest (2010).
