Claudia Mateus (Portugal) Flashing Time, 1:44
Film & video programme „Measurements of time“
14/09/2010, Tuesday, 17:00 - 18:00, Studio 7, Art Academy
Flashing Time was recorded in a photographic studio; the video depicts a hypercube that appears for a brief period, due to the only light source being provided by the flashlights of the photographic studio. Therefore, the result is intermittence between black and the frames depicting the hypercube. We can only perceive the image when the flashlights coincide with the shutter of the filming camera because of the time synchronization gap between both pieces of equipment, exploring the porosity of the media and the co-presence of movement and stillness, continuity and discontinuity. Thus, the projection of the video has the same effect on the spectator of a flashlight, originating the persistence of luminous impressions on the retina-after-images.
Born in Lisbon, in 1979. Currently lives and works between Lisbon and London. She studied Fine Art (Licentiate degree) at Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa, Lisbon and the MA at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. Previous shows include: “Misuse” (solo show at Galeria Sete, Coimbra, PT, 2008), “Circa Art Magazine_Culture Night 08” ((curated by Lee Welch) Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin, Ireland, 2008), “Videoholica 08” (Cittadellarte of Michelangelo Pistoletto Foundation, Biella, Italy, 2008), “In Reality & Fiction” (CHPL Espaço Polivalente, Lisbon, PT, 2008), “MA Show” (Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, UK, 2007).
