ISIS Arts, UK and BEK, Norway present
Contemporary South Africa
A new video screening programme of established and emerging contemporary South African artists
17.09.2010, 18:30-19:30, Studio 7, Art Academy
The cultural isolation of the apartheid years has made is difficult for artistic endeavour to survive with ease but the international art world began to open to South Africa in 1993 when the Venice Biennale included South African artists for the first time. Embracing the international artistic community was taken a step further with the Johannesburg Biennale in 1995, which brought the international art world to the country. The video works in this programme explore the social landscape of South Africa, focusing on the dynamic interactions between and with place and time, land and people, past and present, present and future. The work raises the powerful questions, how should our future look and how do we face our past?
